Other than the issue you mentioned about maybe needing to IPL from A to bypass a bad PTF is there any other advantage to do a more frequent perm apply? Does it reduced time for a SAVSYS? Does it make IPL any faster? Does it save on disk space?

Many of our MSP clients apply new PTFs twice a year. There's a nice cadence...apply temp, three months later apply perm, three months later apply temp, and so on.

Steve, how often do you do a perm apply for PFTs? We normally only do that prior to a release upgrade (next time would be when we install 7.4) or if IBM tells us we have to for some reason. May not be 5 years between do a perm apply but could be 2-3 years. Do you do one once a year, once every six months, each time you are about to install a cumulative PFT group?

Exactly my point. If you're regular on applying PTFs but haven't perm applied in 5 years then your A side recovery option isn't worth much.

When does one have to IPL from the A side, except to bypass a bad PTF which is only temp applied?

Regular perm apply is a good idea. If you ever have to IPL from the A side it certainly helps.

We only explicitly perm apply as part of OS upgrades.

Subject: Perm vs Temp PTF applies

So I've run across something interesting. I was talking with someone about applying the latest cume / group PTF on a V7R1 server that has not had PTF's applied in over 3 years. When I asked if the existing PTF's had been perm applied, the response I got was that they never apply the PTF's perm but keep applying temp.

Does anyone else do this? I've always done the apply cume temp, let it bake until the next pack comes out, apply perm before SAVSYS (at least), then apply next cume pack.

Is this not the way of PTF care and feeding?

Thanks

Robert
