I've tried all 10 tapes. Nine of them initialized. The only one that
didn't work was the one I tried yesterday.

So much for ass-u-ming the issue was tape incompatibility Windows/IBM i
instead of, oh, maybe this tape is bad.

The first I initialized took almost 30 minutes, another took 3 minutes, and
all the rest took only seconds.

Back to my regularly scheduled job.

I decided to try a different Windows tape this morning, just for fun.

This one initialized! And I was able to save a file to it and display
it. The INZTAP took almost 30 minutes, even though I said CLEAR(*NO). A
subsequent INZTAP (after the save and display) took just seconds.

So maybe the first tape I was using was just a bad tape . . .

Got 8 more to try.

Perhaps that chip writing was done by hardware encryption or some such
