Any way to find out of this is a warranty issue or not? If not, I'll
probably just buy it and do it myself. I remember having to do this on my
515, but not so early.

OK, first whiny fans are soon to be silent fans. So this is a self solving
problem. :-) Actually call IBM and get them to replace it. (They will
replace the power supply) Generally the whine is a bearing warning you of
impending failure. The fan is 'wobbling' as the bearing is no longer
holding it straight.

Stopping and cleaning likely just got the fan to spin up without the
wobble but after a time it did so again.

As you discovered the replacement is simple and requires no down time.

Many years on farm equipment trains the ear for sounds that are 'not
normal.' When such 'not normal' sounds end it is usually expensive,
sometimes dangerous, and always a serious dent to productivity.

It seems my 41A power 8 system has developed a very high pitched
whistle/whine in one of the power supply fans.

A few weeks ago I took them both out (very nicely designed for easy
removal!) and cleaned them out with a little compressed air. Seemed to
fix
it.

But, now after a couple weeks it's back.

Is this common? Is there anything I can do to lubricate them and stop the
whining?

And when I removed the fans before I shut down the entire machine and
pulled them both out. But, it looks like I can pull one out at a time
while the system is running... Is that the case?

Thanks!
