I'd probably attach the cable to the server, label it clearly and not plug the other end into the patch panel unless it was specifically needed.

console?) with two NICs. One NIC to the PC would go to the corporate internet and one would be on a private lan with that PC and the ASMI/HMC port only. Me? I've put that port into the corporate internet and added it to our DNS.

If you need to talk someone into plugging a cable into it for you find the service repair manual for your model at ibm.com and on the rearview image you will see those ports.
