Our Technicians check daily. Compare file sizes and update dates, etc.
SPHiNX makes it really easy.

Monthly we do a restore test, usually with a small library we call AGILE
just to be sure the "tape" is readable.

I have to ask Larry, how often do you check that replication is occurring
between one VTL and another? Granted, you're using different "tapes" but
they are in the same physical box. And our setup with multiple VTL's are
supposed to be replicating. And, at initial installation, I did test
restoring from a replica.

Yep had a customer like that. HAD. They never changed the tape and of
course the system failed right after that thing you do before you start
the backup: INZTAP. Yes they had RAID and that's why they didn't call
when the first drive failed 18 months before. They stole their ECS modem
line for their fax machine. They they bailed on the machine because

Used the same one tape for every nightly backup? Good grief!

Back in my consulting life it was amazing that the time most often that
a
system died was during backup. So, if you didn't rotate media, you were
toast.
