True indeed but not an option in his Power7 system. There are only two options for internal RAID cards on that machine. One is a pair of cards with Cache and the other is a single card with no cache. IIRC the second option isn't even supported for IBM i.

Don,

Another option, if possible, would be to use a different raid controller with more cache.
This would also reduce your IO.

Don,

The memory will definitely help, reduce paging which will reduce IO.

Another option I didn't mention is PCI flash adapter.

Don,

1) What feature disk controller are you currently using?
FC5630

2) Do you have a BP, I'm sure they could locate SSD drives.
I am a BP !! I have checked all options I am aware of and nothing NEW is available.

3) Did you consider attaching a EXP24S for additional drives?
While this is an excellent option not in current budget.

4) The SSD option will give you 4x the performance, switching from RAID6 to RAID5 will be slight.
At this stage any gain is a blessing - at EOM system can slow to a point where users have trouble logging on.
We are going to add 1 more driver, double memory and switch from RAID6 to RAID5. I think that is all we can do without SSD's or new box.

5)Also, for future planning - IBM announces end of service dates (no more
maintenance) for various Power 6 and Power 7 platforms.
Yes i am aware this box has EOL in 2019.

Subject: Downgrade from RAID6 to RAID5

Hi All,

Long story short.

Have a system at 7.3 with 6 x 139GB spinning disks RAID6 and a disk write performance issue.

As RAID6 will require three writes to update all striping and RAID5 will need two theoretically converting from RAID6 to RAID5 should provide a performance increase ?

There is no space for additional drives in this system - Mirrored pair are used in Asp02

SSD's is not an option because both IBM and IBM remarketing both do not have any of the required drives for this model 8202-E4B

We are considering second hand SSD's but not a preferred option.

Has anyone changed the RAID configuration from 6 to 5 and have any comments on the process ?

Thanks
Don Brown
