Same. FC #2053 if short and in the 'upper deck' and I believe FC #2051 if in the full high slots. The SSDs are FC #1996. You need four to fill the card.

In all cases they report in a FC #F7CD for the card and FC #58B2 for the drives.

Hi Paul,

Is the PCI flash adapter and the internal RAID card that Larry commented

Do you have a feature code ?

We have had good success adding the internal RAID card with the four
credit card sized 177GB SSDs, it takes 2 slots but you can also add an
'upper deck' which is four PCIe slots above the power supplies. Me, I
would mirror those drives as those particular RAID adapters do not have
write cache.

Once installed you would tag your most popular files with *SSD and you
get both space and performance.

The application on ths system has the data in separate libraries to the
programs - can a library be tagged with the *SSD option or must be at an
individual object level ?

Don,

The memory will definitely help, reduce paging which will reduce IO.

Another option I didn't mention is PCI flash adapter.

Don,

1) What feature disk controller are you currently using?
FC5630

2) Do you have a BP, I'm sure they could locate SSD drives.
I am a BP !! I have checked all options I am aware of and nothing NEW is
available.

3) Did you consider attaching a EXP24S for additional drives?
While this is an excellent option not in current budget.

4) The SSD option will give you 4x the performance, switching from RAID6
to RAID5 will be slight.
At this stage any gain is a blessing - at EOM system can slow to a point
where users have trouble logging on.
We are going to add 1 more driver, double memory and switch from RAID6 to
RAID5. I think that is all we can do without SSD's or new box.

5)Also, for future planning - IBM announces end of service dates (no more
maintenance) for various Power 6 and Power 7 platforms.
Yes i am aware this box has EOL in 2019.

Subject: Downgrade from RAID6 to RAID5

Hi All,

Long story short.

Have a system at 7.3 with 6 x 139GB spinning disks RAID6 and a disk write
performance issue.

As RAID6 will require three writes to update all striping and RAID5 will
need two theoretically converting from RAID6 to RAID5 should provide a
performance increase ?

There is no space for additional drives in this system - Mirrored pair are
used in Asp02

SSD's is not an option because both IBM and IBM remarketing both do not
have any of the required drives for this model 8202-E4B

We are considering second hand SSD's but not a preferred option.

Has anyone changed the RAID configuration from 6 to 5 and have any
comments on the process ?

Thanks
Don Brown
