I am installing 7.1 on an 8286-42a from virtual volume in VIOS.

Is this an upgrade or an install on an empty partition ?
I assume this is the second item.

- The LPAR starts.

I understand you are running an IPL D, right ?

- It runs
- The green-screen console comes up.

Then it quits when it tries to install the Licensed Internal Code and says
in the console:

*A device could not be selected to be the load source.*

In my opinion, this error is related to the disk it wants the microcode on, not the virtual CD usid to IPL.
Are you sure that your partition sees disks and that the virtual adapter which controls the disks is tagged to be used to IPL once microcode is installed ? When running an IPL D, you should have an option to look at the resources, including disks that the partition is aware of.

But the LIC is on the volume it booted from ... dunno what to do. Any tips?
