Like John Yeung said, it's a one liner.

If you don't want to ls the folder repeatedly, ls it once to a file once
and repeatedly grep the file instead.

"Best" is hard to define, and usually subjective. In day-to-day IT
operations (and often beyond), "old-hat" does not count against a
solution. Actually, it often counts *toward* a solution. Sometimes

You seem set on using what you know. So use it. IFS APIs are old-hat
for you, and they will work, so clearly that is the best option for
