Our document management system stores files on Windows, so I have a single Win2012 server in my rack. For non-technical reasons, I changed from QNTC to NFS. On Windows, NFS is an optional component. I just had to find the install source, load it and reboot.

Good catch. So one could use a mount instead of QNTC? That shouldn't be too hard to set up. I've used mounts between lpars of IBM i. I suspect in Windows it's one of those options that are free but you have to install.
