You host it as a guest of IBM i. :-) :-)

I joke, of course that would be silly.

I have been aware of the Power version of HMC has been coming and we have asked for 'some time' 'Why Not?' It has always been a bug in my craw why we needed X86 stuff to start up our Power stuff.

So here are a few ways I could see this thing useful. These options are not for every shop clearly but they could exist.

1) Acquire the lowest end of the 822L model and run it exclusively as an HMC. In this scenario it replaces the physical CRx line directly. It is 2U which is not my favorite but it IS POWER and that's good. My guess is pricing could be made to be very close. Since it's standalone this is a simple scenario.

2) If you already have 'L' models around add it as an LPAR there.

3) In a more traditional 'i' shop the options get thin more quickly. If you have multiple Power Systems then you could in theory have just a couple disks dedicated to a 'hardware' HMC that starts automatically with the server. Thus it is available as soon as the machine is fully operational. There is at least one issue here in that there are a few things you cannot do to the server if it is beyond 'Power Off' so you that's the reason I suggest this works only in Multiple server shops as you would 'cross support' the machines.

If you have ONLY ONE Power System then I honestly don't see how this fits for you.

I'm wondering how this slices and dices disk. For example, on my Power
8's I have one mirrored pair for VIOS1 lpar. Another mirrored pair for my
VIOS2 lpar. And 60+ SSD's all controlled by my IBM i based hosting lpar
which serves up virtual disk to the rest of my guests of IBM i and AIX.
So, where does this HMC lpar fit into all this?
