Consider: Issue a "CREATE FUNCTION show_AudJrn_Entry_Data_as_VarChar" that will invoke code to perform the necessary work to satisfy the requirement [of mapping the unstructured binary data into formatted character strings]; i.e. according to the following, as a suggested revision to the above SELECT invocation, wherein that UDF would appear in place of the CHAR() scalar:

SELECT …
, show_AudJrn_Entry_Data_as_VarChar
( journal_entry_type, Entry_Data )
