Did you have fun writing the Operating System and compilers?

I do realize that at some shops you have to be really good to point out
that a tool will save manpower. But that management looks at several
things:
- Are we busting at the seams that this tool may help us put off adding
new staff?
- Will it reduce overtime?
- Is the project load falling so far behind that we are losing money
making opportunities for the company?
- How many times have I been sold a bill of goods that this new tool will
help and it never came to fruition?

Failing that there's always trying to sell on FUD. This was way overdone
at Y2K. Nowadays people often use SOX, Dodd-Frank, PCI Compliance and
other regulatory agencies. Now that we've been purchased by a public
company you can have some success with this. They'll have to get past
management which may have heard a recent speech about for every new
regulation two old regulations will have to be retired. You can go off on
a political tangent if you just have to but take if off list. The fact is
that some people will be holding out for this.
