One way to reduce the extension files is to create the first extension with a selection of unassigned fields-- several numeric, some alpha, some date-- so you don't need to add multiple extensions to a single data base file...

Our database files here leave a lot to be desired. In our environment
(w/o any change management tool) the trend has been to create an extension
file with a 1 to 1 relationship with the affected file when fields need to
be added to a affected file.

ie Item master file is IIM, so let's create an XIM file that relates to
the IIM file in a one to oen relationship, oops need more fields create an
XIM2 extension file...
