Nearly everything could be done with nearly every programmin language (all are running on very similar machines), programming effort and maintainability might differ!!!
Java is better suited for Multithreading as it has built in support.
RPG has very limited capabilities for high modularisation, as it has no namespaces.
Java has lots of high quality Open Source libraries.
Java has much better Development tools: RDI is very expensive and has no refactoring capabilities. (e.g. in Eclipse you could rename nearly everything on project scope and Eclipse does the rest).
Java has much better support for error handling, as the compiler is checking this.
Java is the dominating educational language:: it's rather easy to hire well educated Java programmers, not so RPG.
It might be more easy for RPG programmers to find a job.

As a conclusion of this:
Java is very diffrent from RPG and you can't make a java project, only having RPG programmers; you would need a senior Java programmer.
