As a consultant the correct answer to that question is: It Depends! :-)

Three categories:
1) Infrastructure
Fixed IP nearly mandatory. How you gonna maintain a switch or router if you have go guess it's IP?
Similar for things like IMMs and infrastructure management devices.

2) Servers
Fixed IP strongly recommended because again we need to know where they are. Now in some cases there are devices well integrated with a dynamic IP infrastructure with properly recorded Dynamic DNS. In this case dynamic can work.

3) Users and User things like Printers.
Dynamic Dynamic Dynamic. Record in DDNS and yer good.

I thought fixed IP's were bad!?

Likely. We see the HMCs go down much sooner than Power7 or Power8 machines. The small 1" fans simply cannot move enough air when the room gets toasty.

Do take a few minutes and configure up the IMM though. Can be your ticket to staying in your pink fuzzy bunny slippers and restarting things from home. :-)

Larry,

Honestly, I'm not sure if IMM is wired and/or configured.
Only ever used the HMC web access.
Currently I can't ping the HMC, so think it did shut down, due to high temp.

Will know more in the morning.

Paul

First thing I would do is access the IMM that is built into the HMC hardware. From there you can see the HMC temps, see if it's running or idle, start it up or shut it down etc.

Of course you DID cable that, give it a fixed IP address, and create a logon to the IMM, RIGHT? :-)

All our iSeries LPAR reported multiple temperature alarms, SRC11007201 - AMBTEMP.
Cannot currently access our HMC remotely via WEB interface..
I think it may have shut down, due to high temperature.
Data Center was over 100, temp coming back down.
Any other ways to remotely check HMC.

Thank You
