RE: Unable to add permissions to a file

Adding permissions to a file in MS SQL is a straight forward affair. Even if thousands of people are using that file it goes through without a hitch and the new permissions take effect on new connections.

For whatever reason in DB2 for IBM I get these errors often using Navigator to add permissions to a file:

File FILENAME in library LIBRARY in use.
Function not done for user profile XYZ
One or more errors occurred during the processing of command.

What would cause this?

If a running job has either a library or a file open, the object is locked and you cannot change authorities directly. You can make use of authority lists. You will still need to have an object lock on the library/file to link an authority list to it, but once you do you can change the associated authority lists no matter what has a lock on the library or file.

Setting up authority lists is indispensable on our system, and I can't imagine how others survive without them.

And yes, the rest of the world wonders what is wrong with IBM that this can't be handled better.
