The idea behind using a data area is that you can have several "parameters"
that allows you to control several statements in your QSTRUP program. For
example:

Pos 1 - If set, exit without starting printers
Pos 2 - If set, start Dieter's JVAGATE
Pos 3 - If set, Don't start QINTER
and so on...
You don't have to change and/or create new QSTRUP copies. Just do a
CHGDTAARA and you are set.

BTW, I see in your signature that you are in Kalamazoo!! I have fond
memories of that city when, back in 1998, I visited a company called I/NET
for some technical training.

Take care,

Luis

At one former employer, to change the code like that would require a
mountain of paperwork and two weeks to get all of the approvals (and was
getting worse when I left). To change the data area, just do it.
In that case, from the paperwork alone, it was much easier to just change
the data area. But otherwise; I agree, it is a tossup of preferences.

IDK if it's any easier to type in
CHGDTAARA MYDATAARA ...
or
CHGSYSVAL QSTRUPPGM 'RETURNPGM'

But it seems like a matter of style.
