The only really required parts of the "prepare for upgrade" list are loading
and agreeing to the license agreements (Verify Image Catalog will not
complete until you do) and create space for the LIC. The rest are optional
BUT very highly recommended.
If you want to add new products to the list you can add them at will. When
the automatic load runs (the only reason for the list by the way, you could
just do it manually too) then it will pick up any new products and assuming
the media is in the image catalog it will load them.

I understand, but remember that you have to do all of option 5 Prepare for
install, before you even do the VFYIMGCLG. Kind of weird, I admit.
And, as I said earlier, I even forget when doing some upgrades.
But I'm pretty sure that option 5 does have that blank line at the top also
and you won't have to wait until you complete the install to do RSTLICPGM.
RSTLICPGM is what one had to do before they added the blank line at the top.
And, you're right, it's best to do this using the blank line at the top of
option 5. Because, if you don't, and you put on your cume and groups, then
run the RSTLICPGM, you'll have to rerun the cume and groups.

Rob,
I thought this would be part of option 5 - Prepare for install, which has
to be done before the install and to verify the image catalog.
I will look further into that option.
I vaguely remember similar issues in the past where the OS upgrade process
didn't handle changed LPP numbers or new LLP that came out later.
Last resort would be to RSTLICPGM after the OS/upgrade is complete, but I
really do not want to go that route.

Let me try again.
Let's pretend you were not doing the OS upgrade.
Type in
GO LICPGM
11. Install licensed programs
You will see something like this:
Licensed Product
Option Program Option Description
_ _______ ______
5770SS1 Library QGPL
5770SS1 Library QUSRSYS
5770SS1 1 Extended Base Support
...
Notice that input capable blank line above ?
I could change it to
Licensed Product
Option Program Option Description
1 5770JV1 16____
5770SS1 Library QGPL
5770SS1 Library QUSRSYS
5770SS1 1 Extended Base Support
...
Press enter and it would insert 5770JV1, option 16 into the list.
Now, I cannot get into the exact screen that you're at because all my
lpars are already at 7.3. But dollars to doughnuts it has that same blank
line at the top.
It does NOT read the media to generate this list! Just because it does
not show up on this list does not mean that the LPP you are trying to add
is not on the media you are using.

Rob,
The items not listed, (same as my list below) came out after IBM announced
V7R2.
5770JV1 Java 8 and IBM_i_Open_Source_Solutions are listed on ESS site, as
separate products not part of a group, which I did download and added to
my image catalog.
They are NOT listed on V7R2 Media Labels and their contents.
I have time, no rush.
I need to dig deeper.

Define "did not work". Might it have had anything to do with the fact
that when IBM upgraded from 6.1 to 7.1 they kept java at 6.1 and continued
to call it 5761JV1 but when they upgraded to 7.2 they started calling it
5770JV1?
Do you see 5761JV1 or 5770JV1 at ESS for 7.2?
Do you see 5761JV1 or 5770JV1 on the 7.2 "Media Labels and their contents"
at
http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/rzahc/rzaskMediaCont

You just may want to consider outsourcing your upgrade. We all have our
strengths. Our network guy throws a bolo if I get anywhere near one of
his routers. It sounds like you're very busy and digging down into the
minutia is not something you have the time for.

Rob,
I'm not seeing or finding " If it does not appear on the list put a one in
the blank area, type in the product, and the option"
I also tried adding via Adding additional licensed programs to the
installation list at
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/ssw_ibm_i_73/rzahc/rzahcswsvf
ycustlist.htm
That also did not work.
Still need to add:

If it appears on the list you can simply put a one on it, even if you do
not yet have it on your old release.
If it does not appear on the list put a one in the blank area, type in the
product, and the option.
I often do this during upgrades. For example, newer versions of Java and
so on. And, um, I upgrade earlier than many people so the upgrade PTF's
for the earlier release listing new options isn't often out. Now that IBM
has had that blank line the last few releases they don't bust a hump
getting new items listed in upgrade PTFs.

Sent by: "MIDRANGE-L" <midrange-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx>
When reviewing the customized list created by " Work with licensed
programs for target release"
I noticed some items were not pre-selected as I expected and other items
were not on the list.
This LPAR is sandbox LPAR that I only use for i5/OS upgrades and to build
DSLO images combined with latest PTFs.
Several years old at this point.
I now realize that this LPAR is missing some V7R1 products and options
that were added since I upgraded from V6R1 to V7R1 years ago.
My questions now are:
1) Do I need to add those products to this LPAR prior to the upgrade or
can they simply be added during the V7R2 upgrade?
2) How are products added to the list that do not appear (Java 8, IBM I
Open Source) not appearing.
I'm also seeing some new LPP that could be added to the list, probably
should review before continuing/finalizing the list.
