Larry,
Besides i5/OS, how many 3rd party products are running on your V5R3 system?

Rob, that is a great question. I am still trying to get details on the hardware because I've been told it will not support 6.1. I want to verify that and I'm waiting patiently to see the hardware info!

What is the "From machine"?
What is the "To machine"?
Does either support 6.1?
If only the "To machine" supports 6.1, does it support multiple lpars so you could spin up your 6.1 lpar temporarily?

Brad is right here, the real secret here is knowing EXACTLY what to save and restore.
Suppose you have a V5R3 system and a fresh build of i 7.3 system from IBM Media.
Now from the V5R3 save your programs and your data. Now restore those to the i 7.3 system. Perfect and you are done....? Biggest issue might be compatible media!
But wait, there's more! In this scenario you need to consider all the O/S thing such as communications, IP configuration, any remaining SNA stuff, Network attributes, system values, database names, Directory entries, Job scheduler entries, spooled files... And did I mention security, yeah that too. Many of these things may be little to nothing for you but they are ignored at your peril.
Also there is the IFS. If you know your app and what it does (or
doesn't) use in the IFS again you are good and I will say the older the app the less IFS use there is, generally.
But this is not an UPGRADE it is a MIGRATION. There is a big difference.
The only supported path as an UPGRADE is to go V5R3 to i 6.1 and then i
6.1 to i 7.2 and then to i 7.3. That's a lot of upgrades and of course you need to have the right hardware and a lot of disks laying around to pull all those upgrades off.
So the right path is defined only by you. Influenced by your need for speed, willingness to take risks, and knowledge of your system.

Larry,
I may be in the minority, but I have done it.. more than once. Just
did
it
from V5R4 to V7R2.
But, I don't do system saves for that. I do the same thing I do on my
PCs. I save only "non system" programs, objects and data. That way I
just
take a fresh machine, restore everything and go.
I save everything to a couple different local PCs as save/zip files,
and also upload them to 2 cloud drives as backups.
PC restoration takes about 2 hours. It's reinstalling programs (like
Quickbooks) that takes the most time. but as more applications move
to
the
cloud, it makes this even easier. QB is probably the only one I don't
move
to the cloud yet. (Multiple companies is easier and cheaper on a PC
program).
IBM i restoration takes even less time... FTP the save files up,
RSTLIB,
maybe add a couple settings, start HTTP servers and go.
Once in a while there are IFS authority issues to work out, but those
are
minor.

Hello all,
I know how bad this is to do for about a hundred
reasons,
but I want to know if it is even possible. I have a satellite office
that
wants to perform a full save at 5.3 (don't ask), then restore it to a
7.1
system. I was always under the impression that you could skip on
version
but no more. So that they could go from 5.3, skip 5.4, and land on
6.1.
But 7.1 does not jive with my understanding of what is possible.
Thanks, Larry
