Re: save and restore to do OS upgrade

Brad is right here, the real secret here is knowing EXACTLY what to save and restore.

Suppose you have a V5R3 system and a fresh build of i 7.3 system from IBM Media.

Now from the V5R3 save your programs and your data. Now restore those to the i 7.3 system. Perfect and you are done....? Biggest issue might be compatible media!

But wait, there's more! In this scenario you need to consider all the O/S thing such as communications, IP configuration, any remaining SNA stuff, Network attributes, system values, database names, Directory entries, Job scheduler entries, spooled files... And did I mention security, yeah that too. Many of these things may be little to nothing for you but they are ignored at your peril.

Also there is the IFS. If you know your app and what it does (or doesn't) use in the IFS again you are good and I will say the older the app the less IFS use there is, generally.

But this is not an UPGRADE it is a MIGRATION. There is a big difference. The only supported path as an UPGRADE is to go V5R3 to i 6.1 and then i 6.1 to i 7.2 and then to i 7.3. That's a lot of upgrades and of course you need to have the right hardware and a lot of disks laying around to pull all those upgrades off.

So the right path is defined only by you. Influenced by your need for speed, willingness to take risks, and knowledge of your system.

PCs. I save only "non system" programs, objects and data. That way I just

PC restoration takes about 2 hours. It's reinstalling programs (like

IBM i restoration takes even less time... FTP the save files up, RSTLIB,
