For IBM i it is becoming never. Yes it's useful in loading a machine without an HMC and cheap enough at that point to include it. Image catalogs are where it's at and for shops with many partitions,

I'm not enough of an AIX guy to do it but I hear tell that you can install AIX over the network with a NIM server.

VIOS can be installed via a repository on the HMC. This too is a network install, they just do it all for you so you don't need to understand all the pieces. Although they like to break it, for example in HMC 8.840 without Service pack 1 it doesn't work.

Larry,

It's been a long time, please refresh my memory, for what IBM processes do we need a physical DVD disk?

Yes you do need a disk. But it can be either the IBM delivered i_BASE disk or one you create with DSLO. I like the DSLO option because it has ALL the PTFs I put on it not just what IBM has rolled into the current respin.

And absolutely true that if it's not new 'enough' itnoworkie.

I still wonder about

Ok, so instead of a physical dvd you have an ISO file.
If it isn't the latest respin, might that still give you grief when
you "boot from that"?
