Google also has Push notifications for GMail and Calendar events that you
could set up fairly easily as well. That would probably be the best bet.
Just make sure you're server is running to accept those requests. :)

For sure, if I really needed the most responsive possible system, I
would try this approach. But I think you're right that having the i do
periodic polling (using your software) is "responsive enough" for most
use cases and much easier to get up and running.
