RE: DB2 connect server -- MIDRANGE-L

Thanks, didn't know about the Ritmo one from Hit Software.

Sadly they are in the same third party support pit that Progress software entity framework is where they don't keep the driver current.

It took progress software 2 years for entity framework support. 2 years!

It seems Ritmo, still doesn't have entity framework 6.0 support even though entity framework 6.0 was released over 2 years ago.

We want a vendor that actually stays current with their software so we don't have to program with one hand behind our back while waiting for the cool and awesome features everyone else gets to use.

Entity Framework is built on top of the .NET Framework. The .NET Framework provides basic database access, via ODBC, OLE DB and .NET providers (IBM provides all three variations of the providers in IBM i Access for Windows).

The Entity Framework uses an underlying database provider for the specific platform that is to be accessed. The database provider must be specifically enabled, through the provision of a long list of features, to support Entity Framework.

For example, Entity Framework can be used with Microsoft SQL Server, using the SQL Server database provider from Microsoft. IBM (or others) have apparently created an Entity Framework enabled version of the DB2 LUW provider.

Unfortunately, it does not appear that IBM has provided an Entity Framework enabled provider for IBM i.

HiT Software provides their "Ritmo" .NET Framework based provider for the IBM i, that is Entity Framework enabled:

Okay. Nobody said it was. And, what is the relevance?

It appears to me that some people are using the ADO.Net data provider and the "entity framework" to access DB2 data.
