We have been using the ADO .NET driver for years, but writing SQL is a

I don' get this thinking at all. SQL is a high level Domain specific
language for doing tuples calculus and set based algebra. It is a
declarative language, and most database engines are able to compile it to a
very good query plan and get you your results quickly. Yes modern ORMs are
good, and are usually very well instrumented if you need to see what SQL
they are actually generating. However, why not just write SQL. It doesn't
take a lot longer in programmer time. ORMs don't generate better SQL than
the average programmer. SQL is not assembly. Its readable and writable by
mortals.
