I'm looking specifically to use the entity framework driver to minimize the need to write SQL anymore. Was hoping someone had some experience with it. We have been using the ADO .NET driver for years, but writing SQL is a development pit we would like to try start digging ourselves out of.

We use NHibernate well with IBM I but are looking for alternatives. There are tons of options on other RDBMS, but we are finding that we have slim pickings with IBM I flavor of DB2.

Suppose we will need to contact IBM as looking at the Nuget download counters for the IBM DB2 entity framework driver seems like no many people are using it.

Nope.

As I understand it, the free DB2 for i drivers don't support .NET entity framework.

You have to pay for DB2 Connect.

If I run a .NET IIS app on a windows server that is local to my
network, I wouldn't need DB2 connect right?

I can just use the DB2 entity framework driver and connect directly to
the IBM i via the DRDA ports and bypass DB2 connect altogether correct?

It's necessary for 2-tier situations. For example, if you have
Node.js on Amazon EC2 Linux and desire to connect to DB2 for i then
you'd need DB2Connect. If you run your Node.js directly on IBM i in
PASE (1-tier) then you can use the database adapter/driver IBM provides.

Does anyone know what the purpose of the DB2 Connect server is? Why
add a link (single point of failure) in the chain and an extra hop
in your database access?
