I think that the temp use is often from people who have limited their SQL
stuff to that learned by Query/400. Query to an outfile, query that to
another outfile, finally query that. Three queries must be run in
sequence. Ouch. If you're doing that, you're doing it wrong. I think
this is what you were referring to replacing with common table
expressions.

Fear of learning parameter markers and stuff often leads people to
populating a temporary table and then joining that to the raw data for
their 'select'. Again, another Query/400 trick.
