No, these don't use CPYSPLF. They use the Host Print Transform API.

From the first look at things I'd say it's font substitution that is the
problem.

When doing this type of conversion you need to have the fonts in the
spooled file resident and installed on your IBM i. If they're not there
one of two things happens..

1. It will error out with object not found errors
2. It will convert trying to use font substitution. When using a
proportion font (which most are for AFPDS) that will cause alignment issues.
