InfoCenter page that explains how the default JDK version is set. This is
for IBM i 7.1, there are similar pages for other releases.
IBM i 7.1 is set to default to JDK 6, even if you have a more recent JDK
installed. It appears that IBM sets the JDK version to what was current when
the IBM i version was released.

Subject: Re: changing java version from 1.6 to 1.7 or 1.8
i do set my JAVA_HOME via application using addenvvar, and was able to set
tomcat using export.
when i type java *version, it defaults to 1.6 even though i have versions
1.4 to 1.8.
Do you know why it defaults to 1.6?

My first thought was to point you to the Java list. It still might
behoove you to search their archives, maybe even subscribe. However,
I think as a general rule those of us on this list need to know this
as I think migrating away from Java 6 is something we all should be
working on.
