Rob,

I haven't done a P8 firmware update, but here's my notes for P7 using a USB flash drive.
I would like to use the other FTP and/or hard drive methods, but have found issues with those.

My notes using USB method.

To check firmware
Systems Management, Servers, select, updates, view system information,

To download firmware
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/support/index.html?LNK=browse
Download fixes, Recommended fixes, Select your release, 6.1 , Select you topic, Server firmware policy set to HMC

Click link in document, Click here for Server Firmware information on HMC-managed systems.

Follow the HMC wizard, Power7, 8205-E6C
Use IE not FF
View the readme, download both the RPM and XML to a USB flash drive on your PC
For the XML file, rtck, save target as , make sure not saved as INTERNET shortcut

Ensure any Prereq PTF are already installed on Power 7 partition

To update firmware
Plug USB flash drive into front of HMC
Systems Management, Servers, select, updates,
If first 3 digits remain same, (740 / 740) then
Check system readiness

Change Licensed Internal Code for the current release

If first 3 digits change

Check system readiness
Upgrade Licensed Internal Code to a new release

Subject: Power 8 firmware upgrade - HSCF0050

Trying to upgrade Power 8 firmware.
My goal is to get it all downloaded now and then upgrade at a more convenient time as this is a disruptive upgrade.

So I went to fix central. Picked the appropriate firmware and it brought down a list of files:
01SV830_068_048.dd.xml
01SV830_068_048.html
01SV830_068_048.pd.sdd
01SV830_068_048.readme.txt
01SV830_068_048.rpm
01SV830_068_048.tar.gz
01SV830_068_048.xml
01SV830068_special_instructs.xml.special.note.xml

I fully understand that, based on my situation, that this is "disruptive".

I am trying to figure out how to get this from my PC to my HMC so that I can select:
Upgrade Licensed Internal Code to a new release Specify LIC Repository - RACK3, Specify the location of the LIC repository and pick "Hard drive" and not end up with:
HSCF0050 - The repository does not contain any applicable upgrade updates.

I've read all these readme's, special instructions, and even followed the link to http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/8286-42A/p8ha1/smupgradelic.htm?lang=en-us
The FAQ link there was rather dated.
