Several years ago, at my previous employer, we did a major housecleaning.  A whole rack of 9-track tapes, probably over 1000 tapes (8mm, DLT, & QIC), hundreds of old hard drives.  Used a commercial service.  That's the only way to go.

Persionally, I wouldn't be too comfortable with a DIY magnet solution. The company we use for document shredding will also shred tapes and HDD's, so we just do that.
