In reality a PTF save file in QGPL once the PTF has been applied is nearly
useless anyway (cover letter but you can get that on the internet) so I like
to remove them from the system. The EXCEPTION to that is if you are using
SAVSYSINF in your recovery/backup planning, then you absolutely need them,
all they really do is take up space, but as Larry likes to point out, we
sell DASD.

Use WRKOBJPDM QGPL OBJ(Q*) OBJATR(*SAVF) to find all the save files. I'll
bet you have quite a few of them. Get a % used on the disk , delete all
those save files, and then check storage again. You'll be shocked at how
much space all those PTF save files take up.

Regarding the temp vs perm apply of ptfs before an upgrade. I recall reading
here that if you leave PTFs in temp state you might end up having orphan
save files that do not get deleted. It won't affect the system but it will
leave those files (and their space) there for eternity unless you go and
search for them.
Might not apply to current releases though...

If you are applying just the PTFs listed for the upgrade, you
can do an *IMMDLY on the Apply PTF command, if you are doing a
cumulative or Hiper with it, then I would let everything load with an
IPL. In either case, you will need to IPL.

Sometime, before the upgrade, I always like to Perm apply all
my PTFs, which would require another IPL.

As for the extra disks, you can add them to the Image
Catalogue and then select those LPPs which you have a license for or
are products that don't require a license.
