You are out in deep water here. Age is not the problem but current and
updated knowledge is not only related to programming but also related to
the task you are programming for. These goes hand in hand.

You can be an excellent programmer – but if you have no knowledge of how to
calculate the result of a time chartered vessel doing a “ballast leg” you
isn’t able to make a system that is able to show the economical result of
the “ballast leg” before you get a possible charter and thereby if the
charter is profitable.

Its also one justification for higher hourly rates by older contractors.

Gerald,

I'm not seeking information like that now, so I can't answer your
question
with survey data. My experience across a wide range of customers is the
younger folks tend to be more driven and work longer hours to achieve the
same level of efficiency as the older folks do in 40 hours. Eventually
they
hours/efficiency curve merge at after about 15 years in the business.
That
does not necessarily translate into more hours on the job for the younger
folks, just longer to provide deliverables.

you are finding young people wanting to work over 40 hours per week?
we find our younger developers are strict 8 to 5...
now we do find they spend off hours reading and surfing to better their
craft...

Holger,

We are finding on the west coast of the US, California primarily but
the entire coast, is about half the developers working in the tech
sector never went to additional schooling after high school. They get
hired on, work
80-90 hours/week and in two years are as productive as 10 year vets in
the
industry. What they don't have is the industry and life experiences
needed
to produce applications that are effective in a business environment.
Companies are relying on those of us with some grey hair to provide
that perspective.

Maybe this will help your determination - here in Germany i know of a
lot of IBM i shops where >50% of the developers do not have any grade
which is IT related...
