You and I basically agree, the knowledge of the older (nee: more experienced) worker is critical to the efficiency of the development process. The younger worker (nee: less experienced) has to work harder and longer to achieve the same result. Business and industry experience are part of that equation and as important as the ability to program in IOS vs. IBM i for instance.

You are out in deep water here. Age is not the problem but current and updated knowledge is not only related to programming but also related to the task you are programming for. These goes hand in hand.



You can be an excellent programmer – but if you have no knowledge of how to calculate the result of a time chartered vessel doing a “ballast leg” you isn’t able to make a system that is able to show the economical result of the “ballast leg” before you get a possible charter and thereby if the charter is profitable.

of a lot of IBM i shops where >50% of the developers do not have
any grade which is IT related...
