I'm sorry you're feeling put upon, it is not our intention. Our comments
are really directed at those that do not think they should invest their own
money in themselves. In order to keep on top of things particularly in the
system administration space, we must maintain our own equipment or buy
space
on one or the depth and breadth of knowledge we need starts to dwindle, and
fast.
It's the same with developers. If a developer is not keeping up with the
latest tooling and techniques, they get left behind in a hurry. Since the
IBM i space is "greying" to say the least, it requires a doubled down
effort
to keep current.
Agile's business is growing by double digits year over year due in part to
my mania of "do unto yourself, before you do unto customer" therefore
Agile
owns and operates sufficient equipment both Intel and POWER that our
consultants have done it many times before I send them out to do it for
you.
Learning on the customer's dime may be good in the short run but it will
catch up and cause a problem eventually.
There are many venues for developers to continue to build their skills,
clearly COMMON but also a number of for profit conferences as well. All of
them require time and effort in addition to financial commitments.
Having
access to a system for education and R&D is critical to hone the skills you
learn at those venues.
Sometimes customers have sufficient horsepower to set aside development
environments for learning, and then you can latch onto those but it's
becoming more and more rare. (even as the extra horsepower and storage
continues to grow) It's in those cases where access to a system even if
you
have to pay $1200/yr. for it is well worth it.

I heard there were places where you could rent a "machine" but I--
couldn't find any and my cohorts did not know of any either. I even
asked some sales reps at Mainline and they didn't know of any. I
finally gave in and broke down and BOUGHT a small iSeries to the tune
of $26K for a single user license so I could develop software that I
wanted to market. I would have been much happier spending $1200/year
if I could have ever figured out what to Google to find you.
As an added grouch point, since it was a single user license, I called
about adding a second user so a cohort could do some work on my
machine and it was an another $5K per user.
