With all due respect, the way you've phrased your decision-making
process is backwards from best practice.

For production code, you should always favor simplicity, readability,
and maintainability. You should try "the simplest thing that
works"(TM) first. If, and ONLY if, you have MEASURED it to be too
slow, THEN see if some other way is faster. Don't ever assume that
the simpler way is too slow until you've tried it. This is actually
the essence of the famous warning against premature optimization.

The ironic thing here is that all your check-first rigamarole might
wind up being not as robust as just doing the straightforward thing,
as Chuck has pointed out in his inimitable style. And it sounds like
you haven't even proven it to be faster.
