If I could determine the set-width of a character string, in the font in
which it is presented.


Not sure what you mean by set-width. Would it help if you knew the
"pixel-width" of a character set based on font name and size? A table with
the following columns?

Font Name, Font Size, Character, Pixel Width

For each character in a text string, you could look-up it's pixel-width,
and sum the widths to determine the pixel-width of the string.

Just thinking.
