The idea of using pixels seems plausible excepting the pixel-to-inch
conversion is ratty at best.
I've been playing around with a program that calculates the pixel-width of
characters based on font name and size. The conversion of character-width
to inches is based on 96 pixels per inch under Windows.
If a character width is 12 pixels, that would convert to 12/96, or .125
inches.
You could build a table with the following columns
Font Name, Font Size, Character, Pixels, Inches
Where Inches is calculated as Pixels/96.
