I think I may have found the problem. This seems to be a known problem that has been fixed with PTF SI54993 for 6.1. I am trying to get this PTF installed today.

Description:

The customer is unable to print using the *IBMSNMPDRV system
driver program; the writer ends with message CPD401A. The
printers support SNMP but the community name is not "public".

CORRECTION FOR APAR 'SE60375' :
-------------------------------
Support is being added to the QWPSNMPD driver program for
private SNMP community names. See the PTF coverletter special
instructions for more details.

Hi,

My company has decided to change the read community name on the SNMP protocol on our printers. As a result, printing from the iSeries no longer works. When starting a writer, it stays active for about 2 minutes and then ends with the following error:

Bericht . . . . : Could not establish SNMP communications with device UQ.
Cause . . . . . : Was not able to establish SNMP communications with device
UQ. The reason code is 3. The reason codes and their meanings are as
follows: 1 - The device appears to be an SNMP device but not a printer. 2 -
The device appears to be an SNMP device but does not support the required
level of an industry standard SNMP protocol. 3 - Communication with the
device timed out. This could occur because of heavy network traffic, the
device is not an SNMP device, or the read community name set on the device
is different than expected. Recovery . . . : Make sure that the device is
a printer that supports the industry standard SNMP protocol and that the
read community name is set correctly. Then try the operation again.

I know what the read community name should be. However I can't find how to make the device use this community name when connecting to the printer. I tried adding it with command ADDCOMSNMP, but to be honest I have no clue what exactly I am doing. It seems to me I have to somehow make a reference from the printer device or outq to this community name.

In the IBM documentation on this page http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_61/rzalu/rzaluconsnmpprt.htm?cp=ssw_ibm_i_61%2F1-11-0-4-3 it says "The printer and any network adapter must be set to have, at a minimum, a community name of public.". Does this mean that printers with a read community name other than public can not be used from the iSeries?

Any help on this is much appreciated.

Regards,
Erwin Donker
