I know I can do it with PHP - already use those facilities for extracting page count etc. for another purpose. node.js, Ruby, etc. all present the same issue - increasing the number of things that have to be installed and configured. Remember this is going onto multiple systems and I have no control over what software they already have loaded.

I was just hoping against hope that someone had ported some C/C++ routines that I could call from my RPG and simply package as service programs.

You have probably already thought as far outside the box as I have but
both node.js and Ruby have PDF merging capabilities (gems and plugins).
The devil would be in the details but with PowerRuby and Node being
available more "natively", they might be options if your target
deployment is to more recent versions of the OS.
