Rob,

That was the reason given for a project I worked on... that sometimes the
user's wouldn't be "connected" and had to reply/respond via email instead
of "clicking a link" to verify orders/etc.

We got it working in the end. It was a mess. But not worth the headache.

POP is "simple" and in it's simplicity can come a mess, especially if the
mail box isn't kept clean. Just go and telnet into your gmail account
with POP and have it list available emails. Unless you delete everything
(ie, sent, trash, spam, etc) you'll get quite a large list of emails,
depending on how long you've had your account and how much use it gets.
And not sure if the system you're working with supports folders over POP.
Folders for email were created after POP. :)

Each email should have a unique ID in the POP system, so you'd need to keep
track of those too.

It's just un-necessarily messy. That's why I suggested looking for a
possible alternative and then asked the OP what this project will actually
be doing. With some info on the scope and reason for reading emails it may
make more sense as to why it needs to be done that way.

At first I tended to agree with some that email seems a poor choice for
this when the industry seems to lean more towards posting to secure
websites, ftp sites, etc.
Then again, email is kind of like EDI. Neither side has to be "up". One
sends the transaction to their ISP. That ISP passes it off to the
recipients ISP. The recipients email system retrieves the email. If any
system is down for an not indefinite interval then it will stack up until
the transaction processes through. Much like the background "fire and
forget" of snads versus many TCP/IP alternatives.

Granted, "up" time is pretty much demanded nowadays. However there are
still a lot of IBM i shops out there with a single machine running their
FTP and web sites. And while these machines are a tank you do still have
downtime for PTF's, OS upgrades, etc.
