I'm certain that my son (a chef) has a couple that might but what's the
point. Sledge hammer takes out so much aggression at one time.

Back to the point, you can achieve your goal of having high authority on a
modern partition in many ways. First off there are outfits that sell small
partitions at a very reasonable monthly price. Next a four way system with
the needed compilers etc, when amortized over 3 or 4 years is not that much.
It's legal, it's yours, and if you lease it at the end of the lease you can
send it back for the newer toy.

Target practice, now there's a thought. Trouble is I'm in the UK and we
don't have guns. I do have a set of chef's knives though; do you think
they'll penetrate the side panels?

I don't recall all the rules as IBM tends to change them now and then.

For some releases and machines the O/S was with the machine. This means the
seller should have provide the keys and if they did not but said the machine
was licensed you should get your money back.

For other releases and machines the O/S was NOT with the machine and stayed
with the original purchaser. In this case they cannot give you said keys and
still be in IBM's good graces. Often the use license was transferred off the
machine and to a new machine.

In no case did any other software go with the machine. That is, no PDM or
Compilers etc.

In ALL cases the software is NOT owned by the user only by IBM and a license
to use the software is the best you will ever get. It's those license terms
that change from time to time.

All that said, you can learn from that machine about hardware and RAID and
Mirroring and installs and PTFs and whatnot. You cannot do anything modern
with it anyway, no zend, no Ruby, no serious SQL, no fully free RPG, no
advanced networking none of the new web tools and on and on. So just enjoy
the thing for a while, learn what you can, and then turn it into a beer tap
or something truly useful.

I think some of the cloud services have a 'home use' rate.

Was there some model in the way back machine that had the OS transferable?
Maybe. What model was that and how do you go about getting those
keys
if
the person has initialized the disks are interesting questions.
If there was any thing in the sale that indicated that the keys should
be provided then you may have grounds for an equipment return if they
are unable to provide them.
