i've got a couple 8203-E8A which, reading the original order, are AIX only.
When you see the "properties" page in the HMC you can see that it says "IBM
i capable = True" but "5250 capable = False".
I got as far as installing 7.1 with disks and lan provided by a VIOS
partition, but never tested what that lack of interactive meant...

No it's not the backplane, it's the VET code.

You CAN swap the backplane, and that can make running i easier because you
can use the internal disks then.

Even without swapping anything though an 8203-E4A can run IBM i, it just
cannot have i hosting i, any hosting must be VIOS hosting.

here is an ebay auction for an 8203-E4A IBM I backplane

Is the backplane the part of the 8203-E4A system that differentiates it
as
an I or P?

Can an IBM I backplane be installed in an IBM p 520 8203-E4A? Would the
resulting system run? What would it boot as? P or I ? ( there are many
more 8203-E4A system p systems being sold on e-bay than there are such
system I systems. )

thanks,
