No it's not the backplane, it's the VET code.

You CAN swap the backplane, and that can make running i easier because you can use the internal disks then.

Even without swapping anything though an 8203-E4A can run IBM i, it just cannot have i hosting i, any hosting must be VIOS hosting.

system I systems. )
