In System i Navigator right click your connection, and select Properties from the drop down menu. In the connection Tab you can set the System i Navigator default connection method. It seems you really want "Use default user ID and prompt as needed". The ODBC connections default to the System i Navigator default. You can change that in IBM i Access for Windows->ODBC Administration. Select the data set in error, and click configure. On the General tab click Connection Options for a one off adjustment to the dataset.

Try running that again and rebooting the PC right away.

Bill - very interesting! I used the option to clear all of the password cache but the problem still persists.

I did create a new 5250 session and changed from "Use System I Navigator default" to "Use default user ID and prompt as needed" and this stopped the error in the 5250 session. But the Excel ODBC connection still pops up with a password violation. I did find a place in its connection properties where I could uncheck "save password" but that has not helped.
