I agree completely.
When everyone buys a 3rd party software - EVERYONE has the same software.
What is different?
What advantage do you have?

Subject: Re: Biggest issue facing YOUR IBM i shop?

:) First, I am an old man. I didn't grow up in this world. The fact that I don't identify with the new social media world is expected.
Maybe that is part of the problem? Us old fuddy-duddies just can't keep up? We need new, fresh talent to take us where we need to go?

But to respond to your comment: Isn't that where the competitive advantage lies? The company who can control their own software, and understand it, will have a huge competitive advantage. They will be rolling out new stuff while the software vendors are still having meetings with their sales force, trying to figure out how to catch up.

The case that can be made is that the software is where the
competitive advantage lies today... It's all about understanding and using the tools.

Didn't you just admit in your last post that you don't have a good understanding of "the tools"? Wasn't that your biggest challenge? Just imagine how a line of business manager might feel about managing software development. They know their business, but don't have confidence in their ability to run a software business too.
