Currently we run anything and EVERYTHING, a lot on the iseries. RPG, COBOL, JDE, Oracle, Lawson, .NET, your name it, etc.

Light at the end of the tunnel: In the next few years, the organization will be moving to a more single focused platform. There are only two choices that we know of for a large company: JDE or SAP.

I asked if re-writing in RPG or COBOL was an option being considered. I knew it was a silly question, but it was received like a suggestion to dump computers and go back to paper and pencils.

Funny thing is that our companies don't want to be locked into a language and be dependent on 3GL developers at $50/hr or whatever they cost (and then there is nowhere else to go). Management looks at this as being in the software business - which they don't want to be.

But they all run towards an ERP with a proprietary toolset and get locked into that pigeonhole for $125 per developer hour (and then there is nowhere else to go).

Subject: Biggest issue facing YOUR IBM i shop?

I am curious what is YOUR view, the view from your seat of the most
important challenge facing your shop, possibly you personally. What is
that largest 'going forward' challenge in the next year? 2 Years? Big
or small but most important, look forward, what IS that light at the end
of the tunnel attached to??

Let me ask though, PLEASE:
1) No grousing about the 'imminent takeover of my shop by windows.'
As my mom would have said: "Quit your bitchin!"
2) No grousing about specific people or attitudes (i.e. 'My Manager
doesn't like....')

If either of these happen to be the big issue then phrase it as a
legitimate issue, whining and bitching won't be accepted!!
