It would be pulled to and saved on the PC that ran the report.

So if your report runs over a million record sales detail file and only needs to see hundred records on the report. Crystal will take the million down to PC then run to get the hundred.

Instead of doing it that way.

Use SQL or RPGLE and Stored Procedures to select the hundred records on the IBM i and then let Crystal only pull over the hundred records needed for the report on your PC.

First way bad performance .... second way better.

Bill Hopkins

Paul. with crystal reports, you can run a program and 'save data with
report' so I am wondering is this data being saved on 400 ? i would'nt
think so, I just want to check.

It depends on the tool, doesn't it? I wouldn't save the data anyway, since
it will become obsolete shortly after it is extracted, if you're querying
dynamic files.

So when you use a reporting tool, the data it generates is stored on the
400. So in case of CR, we should not save data with report option at the
very least.

To supplement what Rob was saying about RTVDSKINF:

It tends to take a long time to run, so it's probably best to schedule
or submit this for off-hours. At our shop, we have it scheduled for
Sundays.

As for reporting, PRTDSKINF is just sort of a wrapper for the output
file generated by RTVDSKINF, which is QAEZDISK. You can slice and
dice QAEZDISK however you like. Regarding retention: What I do is
save QAEZDISK to a CSV and download the CSV to my PC, where I can keep
historical data without taking up disk space on the i, and also use
PC-based tools to analyze it quicker and easier.
