There may even be a difference between saving data with the report and running on the server. Or any combination of those options, if they exist.

To the person known as hoteltravelfun - CR used to have a setting to run the query on the server - that is, the IBM i. That is preferred and should almost always be done. This even lets you use IBM i DB2 SQL syntax in a CR report and avoid all the builder stuff there. That's what I used to do a long time ago.

Have you pressed F1 in CR? With your cursor on the option about saving data? I bet you'd be amazed at what you learn.

Just a small point - have we ever learned your name? I forget if I've ever seen it. I'd really like to address you in a non-anonymous manner - I'd appreciate that a lot.

Paul. with crystal reports, you can run a program and 'save data with
report' so I am wondering is this data being saved on 400 ? i would'nt
think so, I just want to check.

It depends on the tool, doesn't it? I wouldn't save the data anyway, since
it will become obsolete shortly after it is extracted, if you're querying
dynamic files.

So when you use a reporting tool, the data it generates is stored on the
400. So in case of CR, we should not save data with report option at the
very least.

To supplement what Rob was saying about RTVDSKINF:

It tends to take a long time to run, so it's probably best to schedule
or submit this for off-hours. At our shop, we have it scheduled for
Sundays.

As for reporting, PRTDSKINF is just sort of a wrapper for the output
file generated by RTVDSKINF, which is QAEZDISK. You can slice and
dice QAEZDISK however you like. Regarding retention: What I do is
save QAEZDISK to a CSV and download the CSV to my PC, where I can keep
historical data without taking up disk space on the i, and also use
PC-based tools to analyze it quicker and easier.
