We are talking text here. A few 1-2 KB to send SQL statement to server. A few KB to a few MB to receive data back.
Unless you are still running twinax or a 10base T network I have no clue what your bottle neck would be.

One big advantage of STRSQL over client based tools is that the SQL runs on the server and doesn't involve so much comm to the local device. I'm not saying it's a deal breaker over client tools. However, as we've seen in some of the threads recently, it does help to track down some bottle necks.
I wonder if some of the SQL tools for Rational Developer for Power (RDP), or whatever it's name is this week, have the intellisense and whatnot you're talking about. Have you used them?
